Welcome to STEPS to engineering

STEPS to engineering was established in 2000 to encourage primary and post primary students to explore the world of science and engineering. The value of the programme has been formally recognised by Government and is a key element of the National "Discover Science & Engineering" programme. It is managed by Engineers Ireland and is supported by the Department of Education & Science, Forfás, FÁS and a number of major engineering employers.

STEPS to engineering, with the help of dedicated volunteers promote engineering to students of all ages through various initiatives. In 2008, over 85,000 students nationwide participated in STEPS to engineering organised events. With many new and exciting projects in the pipeline this academic year promises to further encourage young people of Ireland to consider engineering as a possible career choice.

National Ploughing Championships
Engineers Ireland and STEPS to engineering had a strong presence at the recent National Ploughing Championships held in Cuffesgrange, Farmley in Kilkenny. The Engineers Ireland stand illustrated how engineers contributed to the development of the computer game industry from the 1950’s right up to the present day. Visitors to the stand also had the chance to play a pin-ball machine, pac-man, and Atari as well as enter a competition to win an X Box 360. Among the thousands of entrants to this competition was lucky winner Jack O’Shea from Waterford.  The STEPS to engineering team were also extremely busy with the stand in the Discover Science & Engineering tent. Here students had the opportunity to design and build a tractor using K’NEX and enter a competition to be with in a chance to win a range of K’NEX sets.  We would like to thank all those that visited us the Engineers Ireland and The Discover Science & Engineering marquee. We hope to see you again next year!
